THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE

The Emperor’s New Groove (2000) is a beloved, fast-paced Disney animated comedy about Kuzco, a spoiled, narcissistic Incan emperor. After he fires his wily administrator, Yzma, she tries to poison him, but accidentally turns him into a llama. Lost in the jungle, Kuzco joins Pacha, a kind-hearted farmer whose village house Kuzco wanted to demolish to build a private summer home. As they brave dangers and flee from Yzma and her stupid henchman Kronk, Kuzco slowly learns humility, friendship and kindness. The film has been praised for its bizarre, Dadaist humor, its breaking of the fourth wall and its unique comic tone that departs from the traditional Broadway-style Disney Renaissance formula. In the end, Kuzco regains his human form, mends his selfish behavior and builds a modest home next to Pacha after learning the true value of friendship and his “groove.”
