“Wicked” refers primarily to a 2003 Broadway musical and its recent film adaptation, which tells the untold story of the witches from The Wizard of Oz. Based on a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, the story revolves around the unlikely friendship between the misunderstood Elphaba (the future Wicked Witch of the West) and the popular Glinda. The story delves into themes of misrepresentation, social division and the importance of staying true to yourself, and provides deeper context for the familiar characters and events from L. Frank Baum’s classic.
