Luca (2021) from Disney and Pixar is a charming coming-of-age story set on the sunny Italian Riviera. It follows Luca Paguro, a young sea monster who lives underwater and is forbidden to go to the surface. Against his parents’ wishes, Luca explores the land and discovers that he and his best friend, Alberto Scorfano, turn into humans when dry. Together they experience an unforgettable summer filled with pasta, ice cream and dreams of a Vespa. They disguise themselves in the town of Portorosso and befriend a girl named Giulia to compete in the local triathlon. The film, directed by Enrico Casarosa, is a heartfelt ode to friendship, acceptance and overcoming fear, often summed up with the phrase “Silenzio, Bruno!” Luca must choose between his old life and the freedom he has found in the country, and learn to embrace his true identity.
