The Ouija board is a game board with the alphabet, numbers and “yes,” “no” and “goodbye” to supposedly contact spirits. It was invented in 1890 by Elijah Bond in Baltimore and is popular as a parlor game. In the context of the spiritualist movement, it was used by mediums after the Civil War to contact the dead. Participants lightly touch a heart-shaped planchette, which then shifts to form messages, although the movement is actually caused by the participants’ unconscious movements.
