PAC-MAN

Pac-Man, released in 1980 by Namco and designed by Toru Iwatani, is an iconic maze-chasing video game that defined a generation. Players control a yellow, round character who eats dots in a maze while dodging four colorful ghosts: Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde. Eating larger “power pellets” turns the ghosts blue, allowing Pac-Man to eat them for bonus points. Originally titled “Puck Man” in Japan, the name was changed for the U.S. release to avoid vandalism. The focus was on a “cute” aesthetic to appeal to all genders and stand out from the popular violent shooting games of the time. The game was an international sensation, becoming one of the most successful arcade games of all time and establishing Pac-Man as the first mascot in the gaming world.
