Up tells the story of 78-year-old former balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen. After losing his wife Ellie, he attaches thousands of balloons to his house to fly to South America. He sets out in search of Paradise Falls, with which to fulfill a lifelong dream. He is unexpectedly joined by Wilderness Explorer Russell, an 8-year-old stowaway. Their journey takes them to a lost world filled with talking dogs, exotic birds and the villainous Charles Muntz.
The film explores themes of grief, adventure and the importance of living in the present. Carl learns to let go of the past and embrace new experiences and relationships, especially with Russell. The story works toward a heartwarming denouement in which Carl and Russell work together. They must help Kevin, a giant bird, reunite with her chicks. After this, Carl begins a new chapter, cherishing the time with Russell and continuing to honor the memory of Ellie.
